“After the Storm CNN”. 82”x52”. Acrylic and Oilstick on Paper.
HCG Gallery, which opened its doors on April 18, 2008, is committed to representing primarily local emerging or mid-career Texas artists. The new Dragon Street space has approximately 3,500 square feet for exhibitions, and movable walls to accommodate different works of art and sculptures of all sizes. HCG Gallery has lighting placed strategically throughout its open floor plan, and high ceilings that create a upscale, downtown lofty look and feel.
“Compositions, Marks and Arrangements” offers a glimpse into the vast body of work created by seasoned artist, Floyd Newsum, throughout his nearly four decade career.
Newsum, who holds his Masters Degree in Fine Arts, showcases his passion for other cultures, with a focus on West African art in his work. He uses a signature combination of marks, along with fish, birds, and ladders in his paintings, to lend a naive look and feel to his compositions, while maintaining a raw edginess. In addition to his showcase at HCG Gallery, Newsum’s work can be viewed in private collections around the country, as well as six museum collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi.
